- Paint Correction
If your hull or topsides look dull, chalky, or covered in swirl marks, paint correction can revive the finish without jumping straight to a costly repaint. Here’s a practical, boat-specific guide you can follow (or use to brief a pro).
What is paint correction (for yachts)?
Paint correction is the controlled removal of a very thin, damaged surface layer—oxidation, micro-scratches, water spots—to reveal fresh, glossy material underneath. On yachts, the approach differs depending on whether your surface is gelcoat (common on production boats) or LPU/urethane paint like Awlgrip®/Alexseal® (common on premium repaints and custom builds).
Gelcoat vs. Painted Topsides: Key Differences
-
Gelcoat
Thicker, more tolerant of careful correction. You can escalate from polish → compound → (if necessary) fine wet-sanding before re-polishing, then protect with a marine wax or polymer sealant. -
Two-part LPU paints (Awlgrip®, Alexseal®, etc.)
Thinner and more delicate. Many systems discourage aggressive compounding and traditional waxing. Care usually focuses on gentle washing and manufacturer-approved sealers; any machine polishing should be light and by an experienced hand.
When should you correct (and when not)?
Do it if you see:
light/moderate oxidation, haze, spider-webbing, swirl marks, water
spots, light scuffs.
Don’t do it if you have:
severe chalking, deep scratches through color, peeling or failing
topcoat—these typically require refinishing.
Step-by-Step Workflow
1) Identify the surface & test
Confirm gelcoat vs. paint. Tape off a small test spot and start with the least-aggressive combo that can achieve the result.
2) Wash & decontaminate
Rinse thoroughly. Use a neutral-pH marine shampoo to remove salts/film. Dry with clean microfibers.
3) Correction paths
For Gelcoat
-
Polish (finishing polish + foam pad) for very light oxidation.
-
Compound → Polish for moderate oxidation (work small 60×60 cm/2×2 ft sections at a time).
-
Fine wet-sand (1500–3000 grit) → Compound → Polish for stubborn chalking or etched water spots. Keep it cool, flat, and controlled.
For Painted Topsides (LPU)
-
Routine: gentle wash; apply the manufacturer-approved polymer sealer by hand if desired.
-
If correction is necessary: only light finishing and careful, low-heat machine work—ideally by a pro familiar with that paint system.
4) Protect the finish
-
Gelcoat: finish with a quality marine polymer sealant or wax for UV protection and water beading.
-
Painted LPU: typically no traditional wax; use the paint maker’s cleaner/sealer.
5) Maintain
-
Rinse after salty runs.
-
Wash weekly in season.
-
Keep fenders, lines, and covers clean to avoid scuffing.
-
Refresh protection when water beading fades and gloss drops.
Pro Tips
-
Work cool & shaded. Heat flashes products and creates holograms.
-
Small sections win. You’ll control pressure and wipe-off better.
-
Pad hygiene matters. Swap pads between stages; residue can mar the next step.
-
Edges are thin. Tape them; lighten pressure near corners and hardware.
-
Document your recipe. Note products, pads, speeds, passes, and outcomes for consistency.
Typical Tools & Consumables (Gelcoat)
-
Dual-action or rotary polisher + foam/wool pads
-
Marine compound and finishing polish
-
Finishing papers (1500–3000) for spot wet-sanding
-
Masking tape, microfibers, panel-wipe
-
Marine polymer sealant or wax
-
PPE: eye protection, gloves, respirator as needed
(For painted systems, swap in the manufacturer’s approved cleaners/sealers and avoid aggressive abrasives.)
FAQs
Will polishing remove too much
material?
Not if you use the least-aggressive method
and stay conservative. Gelcoat is thicker, but still finite—always
test and measure if you can.
Can I treat painted topsides like
automotive clear coat?
No. Yacht LPU systems have
specific care rules. When in doubt, follow the paint maker and/or
hire a pro.
How long will results
last?
With regular washing and timely re-sealing,
gelcoat correction can look great for a season or more. Painted
topsides maintain best with gentle wash routines and approved
sealers.
